Dutch Wonderland surely is A Kingdom For Kids! We visited the park yesterday for the first time ever and we were all very impressed.
Finding the park, parking and entering were quite easy. We were able to ride every ride and even stop along the way to do all the fun extra activities that pop up throughout the park. We did not get the chance to enjoy Duke’s Lagoon because we did not bring our swimsuits. We made the decision earlier to just do the rides and shows.
Some of the most memorable rides include Kingdom Coaster which is a wooden roller coaster, Sunoco Turnpike in which my 2 year old was able to drive the car around the track with my foot being on the gas peddle, the Turtle Whirl which flung us all around and the Space Shuttle which swung the girls left and right high up in the air. There were a good number of rides that my kids could ride on without me. That was great to have since my kids are 2, 4 and 6.
We stopped for lunch at the Mill Stream Eatery and had some cool pineapple and vanilla ice cream cones at the Dole Whip Junction. We even stopped at the Funnel Cake Factory before we left to take some funnel cakes home with us. There is a great deal I have to tell you about at Dutch Wonderland. It is their souvenir cup. After purchasing it, you can then get refills for only $0.99.
We enjoyed a relaxing trip on the Sky Ride and viewed the entire park from up above. We took in a lot of shows too. We visited Celebration Theatre to watch Garfield the Great and Friends, the Amphitheatre to watch Bubba Bear and the Badland Band, Storytime Corner to watch Storytime with the Princess and the Aqua Stadium (twice) to watch The Adventures of the Frog Prince (twice). My 6 year old begged to go back to watch the show again. We figured why not…it was a great show. I have to say that not only was it simply entertaining, it was hilarious and quite impressive. The 6 staff members we watched were very talented. The dives they performed were fun to watch because they weren’t just any dives; They were scripted, entertaining, unique and in one case, extremely high! My daughter spent today at the pool trying to recreate some of the dives. She even remembered which character did them.
Unfortunately, I had one negative experience and it was on the last ride that my 4 year old was looking forward to. Let me first explain that each ride has height requirements just like any other park. She was just slightly over the requirement that put her in the yellow gem zone. She had been measured all day by staff members to ensure she could ride those specific rides and each time, she was cleared….until the last ride. We were sent away because she was clearly an inch under. That surprised me so I asked the staff member to measure again and behold, a whole inch too short. I didn’t understand and nicely told the staff member that I wasn’t sure if that can be right because she was fine all day. We knew there was nothing she could do so we complied and left the line, but I had to calm my crying 4 year old.
I went to guest services as we were leaving the park and told them what had happened. They were extremely nice about it and saw my concern about preventing this from happening again. She made a suggestion for the future that I want to share with you all. She said that when you arrive, go to guest services to get the kids measured. They are the final say so they will override anything different. They will then put a colored wristband on your child so the other staff members know they were already measured and can ride those particular rides. This helps best when you have a child who is right on the border between two height requirements. This was great to know and I will actively be seeking this out at every park I attend with the kids. She also mentioned my concern will be forwarded to the managers so they are aware of this.
Despite that last problem the kids had an amazing day. They really enjoyed the atmosphere and the fun rides. I highly suggest attending Dutch Wonderland if you are in the Lancaster, PA area.
